Statement
I create works that connect different subjects/objects using thread, fabric and photography. Textiles can hold significant meaning and connection as a universal part of human life and thus form the backbone of my works. With this core I reinterpret complicated phenomena through the repetition of the simple act of sewing, moving back and forth between the multiple layers of the individual, society and nature.
Weaving a one-dimensional thread into cloth creates a two-dimensional structure, while sewing it is a three-dimensional act. The family as the smallest unit of society can also be seen as a three-dimensional link between a number of one-dimensional individuals. In such a three-dimensional society, the act of sewing is not merely the sewing of cloth, but is an act with a plurality of care, as it has long been used in witchcraft and rituals, and in medical practices.  In Japan, until very modern times, there were 'sewn symbols' as objects of folk belief (such as the Senninbari, for example).
Connecting photographs, the things in the image, and the relationships and boundaries between the people who took them, is a geometric leap from one dimension to three dimensions, and at the same time an act of redefining the relationship between the individual and society. At the same time, it is a multilayered act that also has a meaning as a prayer. In a work in which the same image is embroidered on the front and back, I attempt to move back and forth between the plurality of meaning and geometrical structure.
By dealing with personal themes, I believe that I can reaffirm the multilayered nature of society while taking myself as the starting point. The nature of the work, in that the more it is stitched, the more the underlying iconography is hidden, is also seen as a representation of society itself, which becomes more anonymous as the number of members increases. The underlying image is mainly a photograph, and the act of stitching transforms the multiple meanings of the photograph as a trace of light into a more complex and more anonymous signifier.
Nature, which is often seen as external to human society, is also seamlessly connected to society. By incorporating photography into my work, I attempt to stitch together the contingency of nature and society as a web of intentions. Through the act of stitching, I continue to move back and forth between nature and the individual.
